Microplastics in the Aquatic Environment—The Occurrence, Sources, Ecological Impacts, Fate, and Remediation Challenges

چکیده
Microplastics are discharged into the environment through human activities and persistent in environment. With prevalent use of plastic-based personal protective equipment prevention spread COVID-19 virus, concentration microplastics is envisaged to increase. Potential ecological health risks emanate from their potential adsorb transport toxic chemicals, ease absorption cells living organisms interfering with physiological processes. This review (1) discusses sources pathways which enter environment, (2) evaluates fate behavior microplastics, (3) African aquatic systems, (4) identifies research gaps recommends remediation strategies. Importantly, while there significant pollution terrestrial systems not widely studied. Besides, a dearth information on systems. The paper that governments non-governmental organizations should fund address knowledge gaps, include: environmental conducting toxicological studies under environmentally relevant conditions, investigating toxicity mechanisms biota, developing mitigation measures safeguard health, pollutants transported by microplastics. Moreover, regulatory measures, along circular economy strategies, may help reduce microplastic pollution.

Microplastics in the aquatic and terrestrial environment: sources (with a specific focus on personal care products), fate and effects
Due to the widespread use and durability of synthetic polymers, plastic debris occurs in the environment worldwide. In the present work, information on sources and fate of microplastic particles in the aquatic and terrestrial environment, and on their uptake and effects, mainly in aquatic organisms, is reviewed. Microplastics in the environment originate from a variety of sources. Quantitative ...
متن کاملHeavy Metal Toxicity in Soils: Sources, Remediation Technologies and Challenges
Soil pollution with heavy metals draws a serious concern because of their detrimental effects on the living biota. The persistent and non-biodegradable nature of heavy metals eases their accumulation in the environment. Agricultural soils are receiving tremendous amount of pollutants from the various sources. During the last few decades, rapid urbanization, industrialization, injudicious and fa...
متن کاملGlobal ecological impacts of invasive species in aquatic ecosystems.
The introduction of invasive species, which often differ functionally from the components of the recipient community, generates ecological impacts that propagate along the food web. This review aims to determine how consistent the impacts of aquatic invasions are across taxa and habitats. To that end, we present a global meta-analysis from 151 publications (733 cases), covering a wide range of ...
متن کاملSources and fate of microplastics in marine and beach sediments of the Southern Baltic Sea—a preliminary study
Microplastics' (particles size ≤5 mm) sources and fate in marine bottom and beach sediments of the brackish are strongly polluted Baltic Sea have been investigated. Microplastics were extracted using sodium chloride (1.2 g cm-3). Their qualitative identification was conducted using micro-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (μFT-IR). Concentration of microplastics varied from 25 particles kg...
